Thanks for the tip Michael. But the idea of a 750Meg download at work is kinda a bit big for a 'teacher'.
I still have hope of getting a couple of machines for Ubuntu...he didnt actually say 'No'..

Hi Kent

To save yourself the wait, you can download the CD image from the Ubuntu website. The standard image of Ubuntu 7.10 weighs in at 730-something megs, which won't take too long on a decent net connection.

Alternatively, you can buy the latest issue of PC Authority, which has the same ISO inside this months DVD.

When it comes time to chose which version to install, make sure you pick the x86 Desktop version, otherwise you won't have a GUI, and the CPU won't be able to process any of the commands!

I've set up over twenty Ubuntu servers - one of which is hosting our dev copy of Moodle - so if you need any help don't hesitate to ask.

Cheers!

(PS - second attempt at sending this, as mail's playing up. Apologies if you all get it twice!)

Hi to all who went to the Moodlefest..enjoyed it immensely.

No one has mentioned that we had the pleasure of TimTams and fizzy drinks!! Roland, I mentioned to our librarian that program we looked at in the office at the end of the day as an alternative to clickview. Apparently since its only about $4 per head and we have small numbers its only about $1400 per year for our school so they look like using it.

On the Ubuntu front, we have since upgraded one of our rooms with 15 new machines(more to follow when the rooms are finished) but I have asked our techie if I could 'acquire' 2 of the old machines and its like I just asked for a date with his sister...odd. I like many of you out there, dont see the resistance to some ideas when met. It was my hope to install Ubuntu on these machines(more capable than my poor slow one I used at Wellington) and give the kids a chance to try it. The techie almost appeared to (without saying) say what, but only I know about Unix stuff and why should I help you...that's how the look I got, felt.

I have ordered the 3 CD's from the Ubuntu site..Ub, Ku, and Edubuntu and await their arrival in a few weeks.

This appears typical, the techies seem to want to hold and keep a secret world...WHY?

For heavens sake, the new machines we just got have 120 Gig drives so why he didnt give say 20 Gig to some for Unix based stuff is beyond me.

Makes you wonder sometimes....

Oh, I also emailed him to set up a Moodle facility for each of the 7-10 classes, one per level, he hasnt done that either - 2 weeks almost since I asked that! Maybe if one of our new young attractive femal staff asked, it'd be done by now (and they'd steal the credit for another idea of mine!) This p's me off sometimes.

Again, as a follow up to my previous post on the list, I only first used MOODLE last year so it too is new to me...ahhh, my brain hurts! Think I will put the kettle on now...

chin up folks...

Kent.

I know this is a tad late - sorry been busy (and currently wading through over 280 unread emails to the edulists!!)

But I would like to express my biggest thank you to Phil Brown for hosting the Moodle Fest at Wellington SC. It was a great day and certainly will play a big role in moodle being re-adopted at my school.

Certainly a steep learning curve but also has added to my bare bones skills (I have now learnt basic ubuntu server commands!)

Special thanks to those who spent time helping me.

And yes Roland - we can probably put something together tomorrow - see you then

Cheers - and looking forward to more moodlemania

Hi Moodle colleagues,

Due to family commitments I ( and probably a few others ) could not attend this great day you had organised - thanks to Phil .
Is it possible we can get a list of the main skills, ideas and features you explored/shared so more can benefit from it.
We can post it to the moodle site or attach to the list email.

Regards
Kevork

Hello moodle fest participants!!!!!!!!!!!!

Firstly thank you so so much Phil for running the moodle install fest at
WellingtonSC - it is much appreciated and I am so impressed with (and
envious of) your ICT facilities!!

Secondly thank you to all those people who helped and encouraged me to
continue my quest to get moodle happening at my school. I will continue
to stomp my feet and flex my muscles (puny as they are!) in my endeavour
to get it happening! I learnt so much and continue to be impressed with
ICT people and how willing they are to share their knowledge and
resources with no expectations of any rewards in return - "free open
source learning" maybe?? If only the rest of the selfish and greedy
world could follow our lead!

OK so I left the fest with a box which had ubuntu (desktop version) and
VMWare installed and it was halfway through the install of ubuntu server
(as a guest VM) when we pulled the plug on it (literally!!) as it was
taking so long - and we finally went home!!

When I got home and plugged it all in - nothing happened - so eventually
I had to delete the linux server virtual machine and then create another
and reinstall the ubuntu server under vmware, imagine my horror when I
finally realized that ubuntu server works entirely from a terminal
window!!! (It took me a while to figure out that there was no gui with
the ubuntu server installation!!) Then - how to install moodle?? -
luckily the www stood in for close friends and I now have a moodle
install which is ready to go as soon as I know what the web address is
and can confirm that it will be moodle.bentleighsc.vic.edu.au <http://moodle.bentleighsc.vic.edu.au/> - but
overall feel pretty proud that I have learnt some basic linux commands
and got to this point. If you haven't already figured it out - I am a
total newbie when it comes to commands - only knowing the basic DOS
commands and most of them I have forgotten! But I have managed to get
the whole LAMP setup happening (still worried about Clam though!) A
steep learning curve but a long weekend well spent!!

TOO COOL!!

Now the BIGGEST challenge - to get this box hooked up to our servers and
make it available to the kids and staff - praying I have some support
from the school end!! If not - you will hear me screaming!!!

Thanks to all of you - I look forward to hearing your stories of how
moodle is being implemented at your schools.

Cheers

Ros

Thanks Phil. I've also been told earlier by the lady lister who informed
us about the mini-conference at Melb Uni that she has booked me a spot
there too. Me thinks I'll be staying in town for that weekend now to get
to the 2 events.

As you said..good early PD points (toward the 100hrs god says we must do
now!)

See you on the 26th and will keep an eye open for your directions.

Can you include a ball park start time too please?

PS. If I bring my 2 computer towers we can 'play' with them..ok? Am
looking forward to this big time!

Cheers..

Kent.
