[Year 12 IT Apps] Security for SACS

We have just started something similar here. The techies didn't want to have
to turn on and off the SAC times and won't give us teachers the privilege of
doing it ourselves. So a multiuser login was created with very limited
access to the network and no Internet access, etc. They are only able to
save work to a USB flash device which they are given each lesson. The
devices are numbered so the same student gets his/her one each lesson. They
are kept in a plastic sleeve with their paperwork. It is working very well
so far. One of the USB devices fell apart in the first lesson, so he got a
new one (it's good to have a few spares). The only drawback is that they are
not able to do a backup. Hmm. Perhaps they could be given write access to a
special backup folder.

We have a system where the students are given a SAC login and password that
only works in the room that they have their SAC's in. This can be enabled
and disabled on a lesson by lesson basis which creates a different home
drive for them that is inaccessible outside of SAC times. The login is set
up in such a way that they only have access to the local PC and the products
that they need for completing the SAC and the rest of the College network is
unaccessible. The SAC's are distributed on USB, which are collected at the
end of each (77min) lesson, but the students are told that they MUST save
their work to the network drive too. Teaches good data recovery/redundancy
techniques.

Hey all,

Just wondering of the procedures used when saving files during SACS - would
really like to organize a special area where students can only access the
documents during SACS time but not sure the best way to go about it. At the
moment files are saved in the student network which means they can be
accessed out with the SAC times. Is anyone out there already doing
something similar and if so can I have some suggestions please!

Claire
