How about 6 hours per week for one entire semester, of building
construction including safe use of static and portable machines,
drafting, hand tools etc. etc. ( B/Ed B/Tech) University of Ballarat? I
think you need to check whets on offer more thoroughly before assuming
that the "good old days" were the golden era.

The problems faced by tech teachers nowadays are much more complex than
they seem sometimes. The real problem is that because of the breadth of
material that can be covered it is humanly impossible to train people in
4 years and expect them to be able to cover every requirement of the
curriculum.

The single biggest problem we have in technology is teachers who occupy
positions and refuse to take on extra study and training to keep
themselves relevant and useful to our kids. We can't afford to rest on
our laurels once the degree is under our belt and we have a secure job.
We have to get out there and behave professionally and get training if
we need it.

Cheers ... Roger

Oh how the wheel has turned ... 'in the old days', 8-10 x 4 hour units -
Safe Use of Woodworking machinery, Portable Power Tools, Woodturning for
Teachers, etc were conducted as the required part of the Tech Teachers
Training course at the Hawthorn Institute of Education, that is, until
the University of Melbourne swallowed it.
