How about 6 hours per week for one entire semester, of building construction=
including safe use of static and portable machines, drafting, hand tools et=
c. etc. ( B/Ed B/Tech) University of Ballarat? I think you need to check whe=
ts on offer more thoroughly before assuming that the "good old days" were th=
e golden era.

The problems faced by tech teachers nowadays are much more complex than they=
seem sometimes. The real problem is that because of the breadth of material=
that can be covered it is humanly impossible to train people in 4 years and=
expect them to be able to cover every requirement of the curriculum.

The single biggest problem we have in technology is teachers who occupy posi=
tions and refuse to take on extra study and training to keep themselves rele=
vant and useful to our kids. We can't afford to rest on our laurels once the=
degree is under our belt and we have a secure job. We have to get out there=
and behave professionally and get training if we need it.

Cheers ... Roger

Oh how the wheel has turned ... 'in the old days', 8-10 x 4 hour units - Saf=
e Use of Woodworking machinery, Portable Power Tools, Woodturning for Teache=
rs, etc were conducted as the required part of the Tech Teachers Training co=
urse at the Hawthorn Institute of Education, that is, until the University o=
f Melbourne swallowed it.
