[Yr11 Information Technology] Networks

Hi Sylvia,

After a bit of searching I found this Educational Network Simulator that I plan to use for introducing networks during remote learning.
http://malkiah.github.io/NetworkSimulator/. It won’t necessarily highlight bottlenecks but it will allow students to identify that there is a configuration issue.

The site is a little dated and the default simulation network is a little complex for students do not have any background in networking. http://malkiah.github.io/NetworkSimulator/simulator01.html

Instead I have created simpler LAN simulation file with a few end user devices, a webserver, a DHCP server and a DNS server. I have attached the JSON definition for the simple LAN. You can just upload the definition file into the network simulator. Students can add and remove devices and see an animation of the packets traversing the network.

With my U4 Software Development class last week I ran some live demos of XSS and SQLi in a virtual environment and I think I’ll do something similar to show how to combat some simple exploits and highlight IDS/IPS functionality with the U2 class. My Unit 2 students definitely need more than theory to keep them engaged at the moment.

Take care.

Kind Regards,

Bernie

Subject: [Yr11 Information Technology] Networks

Hi there
Has anyone come across any good sites for networks for Year 11. I recall a site that you were able to add different hardware and it set up your network and showed any bottleneck issues but it was bookmarked in an old laptop and can’t find it. If anyone has any great online sites as we don’t have the hardware and kids want more hands on then theory. Thanks.
