[Yr11 Information Technology] Year 10 App Development Subject 2015

Hi Jarrod,

No your question was most certainly not an error! But using App inventor to teach programming in Unit 2 would be, although it does output in Java the developer sees none of this and the interface is entirely drag and drop of preloaded logic snippets that are graphically displayed. Hence there is no actual coding and no direct manipulation of code. While it's great for teaching computational logic, familiarity with actual coding and syntax is a different matter and is vital.

Although the current study design states "Flexibility exists regarding the language studied as there is no approved programming list for this area of study" etc etc, the ramp up time for App Inventor is considerable compared to just going to codeacademy or some such and getting started directly with Java. It's an inefficient way to simply introduce general programming skills you'd need in Unit 2. So while it's not precluded it's certainly inadvisable IMHO anyhow. Hope this explains what I meant by "error". Cheers

Kind Regards,

Brett Groves

Hi Brett

Are you saying that you used the MIT App Inventor for Unit 2? If not do you think it would suffice given that there is no required language and technically they are building Java based applications

Hi Cameron,

Not familiar with the text you're planning on using, surprised that a text book aimed at secondary school is directly relevant to app development?

Nonetheless we used App Inventor by MIT this year, which has a drag and drop interface and a phone emulator, takes a small amount of set up and deployment of an AIstarter script but it's a pretty cool way to teach app development plus there are pre written courses in a box for you (gives you breathing space)

or complete course

I did it at Year 9 and found that I did some prep on computational logic using VBA to create interactive digital stories but this wasn't really sufficient for the weaker students. I've compiled a Blocky<https://developers.google.com/blockly/> (https://developers.google.com/blockly/) environment for students to build JavaScript as an intermediate step to app inventor. Stronger students probably won't need it.

Hi Cameron,

You may want to look at Swift instead of Objective C for Xcode.
It's new from Apple and I'm going to be busy over the holidays re-writing, and creating new ideas for the Xcode course here.

Graeme Summer's book is still useful but won't have Swift, unless something else has been planned.

Good afternoon all,

Sorry for the cross posts.

I have just been advised that I will be teaching an App Development elective subject for Year 10 next year and was wondering if anyone had a subject outline similar that I could possibly borrow.

The textbook I will be using is Programming Apps for the Iphone by Graeme Summers.

Thanks in advance.
