[Yr11 Information Technology] yr11it Digest, Vol 113, Issue 4

Hi Vi,
I have just made that exact transition this year. Boy there are things I would do differently and will improve on for next year, but generally the students who put the work in did great work.
It was definitely harder to get going, a couple of my students in 3/4 hadn't done 1/2 the year before so were behind the 8 ball, and struggled even with basic HTML/CSS. This really is a requirement. As others have indicated using Code Academy (for html, css and php) is quite effective, but I find students lose focus and need to intersperse with my own "challenges".

We also had some networking issues. While we do have a php server at the school for my use with students, it was outdated so using classes (such as SPLFileObject which I decided to do), was problematic to say the least. We also experimented with free php hosting (using 000webhost) but that proved unmanageably slow to refresh code updates.
Eventually we had students using EasyPHP (Maggie suggested that to me, too!) and found that if the VC9 version was installed on a USB things went well at both home and school (although a bit slow). I even had 2 students complete their SACs using fresh USBs, while the others used the school's server.

Students with their own laptops definitely had an easier time during class/prac work (obviously not for SACs, but that might even work too, depending on the nature of your tasks).

I used mostly Dreamweaver - because it was already on school network and students were familiar with it - and it helps a lot with site definitions and ftp transfer, but gradually moved my own coding to Netbeans, which I have asked to have installed on the school machines for next year. Some students preferred Notepad++. I left it to them as I was able to help them in each.

As far as activities - I would suggest you will be able to modify some of what you did on VB.Net; and you will quickly realise what concepts (session vars for example) your kids have trouble getting their heads around.

For Unit 4 where interface was important and use on mobile, I introduced Bootstrap. My more able students used this very effectively. Less able we reverted to simple html. I also used the HTML5 input fields with validation and we had a fun(?) lesson on regex.

I will spend time over the next few months formalising much of the "on the run" coding we did and happy to share once I'm there.

Good luck.

Andrew.

Great tasks are also on codeacademy. I will also repost some resources that were previously posted by the late Maggie.

Also, does anyone has any advice on whether students at VCE would find it harder to learn php with SQL than learning VB.Net?
