Thanks Damien, that's a fun activity!
It would be interesting to compare the graphs the students come up with and as a class decide which ones are the most effective and why.

This is a neat little activity about bubble charts that I use towards the end of Outcome 1:

I agree with Margaret that it is developing the critical thinking skills that is the challenge. When presented with raw data, students will happily produce column charts until the cows come home without thinking about whether it is the best way to represent the data.

I do love introducing excel with the Candy is Dandy exercise from Microsoft http://www.microsoft.com/education/en-us/teachers/plans/Pages/using_graphs.aspx
Did it today with my new group of year 11's (I used bags of snakes, jubes, jelly beans  and jelly beans due to various allergies), they loved it - I wouldn't let them eat it until they at least got to the report. I've never seen a group work so productively!

I guess the challenge is how to we develop the critical thinking skills required to use the appropriate chart. I know that most of my kids have the usual Year 11 problems and then some more ...
