I would say D is correct as well – a program syntax error is picked up
during compilation as the program will not run before the source code is
correctly compiled.

 

A logic error is a bug in the programming code, so the program will run but
will give an incorrect answer, so “A” is a logic error. I wouldn’t say B or
C were logic errors as the program is not running at this point.

 

My five cents worth (the Aussie dollar and inflation rate went up again
today).

I do not have the samples this year, but have to agree with you. I would not
have seen a desk check as an area where syntax errors occur. My thought
process matched yours exactly. A would be logic or runtime errors, B is
logic errors, C has nothing to do with syntax, and D makes the most sense
and the program would refuse to compile. Perhaps it's a typo? I'd certainly
give my kids the marks for D.

A quick question of you:

 

The IARTV sample exam provided the following multiple choice that seems to
have caught me out.

 

1. Program syntax errors occur:

A when the program is running

B during a desk check of the algorithm

C during the evaluation of the program

D during compilation

 

I said D because I think the only way to really ensure that all syntax is
correct is through compilation. They provide the answer B but I thought that
the desk check is more about checking logic errors. What do you think?
