[Year 12 IT Apps] A day is a long time in Education

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the warm welcome ( I think ! ).

Please jump in and correct any statements I put out that are not 100%
correct as I wouldn't want to be paddling up the wrong creek in a canoe full
of students.

That includes anything in my initial email.

With thanks

Welcome back to the Dark Side, Kevork!

Hi Folks,

I am just empathising with all these rising stress levels out there . So,
I hope this will make you feel a great deal better.

Having not taught IT apps in the current study design cycle I have been
asked to step in starting next week to take over an IT Apps class.

Ok , now for the hard part. Where do I start ? Surely I have been reading
all the posts over the last 3 years on this list. Well there is reading and
then there is reading.

In the last few days I have reread every post since late 2006 through the
archives and looked at every file posted. It took about 12 hours - give or
take - to step through about 6000 posts.

In that time I have begun to extract some serious information about the
current issues regarding SAC32 ( I will have to go back to SAC31 as a
revision task ).

Here is what I have found so far:

1. I have posted every SAC32 shared on the lists as well as every
contribution related to preparation for SAC32.

a. There are around 5 contributions of actual practice SACs or
activities to prepare students for SAC32 under Resources on the IT Apps link
at Edulists

b. There are 6 actual SACs contributed by your kind and considerate
colleagues. These are under the SACs section of the IT Apps link ( password
needed - apply at www.edulists.com.au ).

2. Harry Schlanger has kindly contributed a wiki, a readme and a
guide, that can be incorporated in the web site of the prototype of SAC32
called Tiddlywiki posted under Resources as above in 1(a).

3. All the software functions for each SAC are listed through the link
to the VCAA site but more importantly not ALL of these need to be shown in
each SAC for assessment. A selection representing the majority should be
assessed based on what the teacher is comfortable assessing.

4. There is useful feedback outlining the success or otherwise of SACs
audited or checked by the state reviewers. Again the report is linked
through the IT Apps site.

5. There are many helpful comments and offers of support from a large
number of teachers to make life easier for others.

6. There are a number of teachers needing more help as they may be
first year in IT Apps even if experienced otherwise in IT or in other
methods.

So, in conclusion I join all those who are truly doing their level best to
give their students every chance to maximise their results this year.

I look forward to your help and offer mine in return as we navigate this
year together.

Kind Regards

With all due respect, what you're effectively saying is that after all your
experience you wont provide Andrew with one of your SACs? Or one of the SACs
that you may have gotten from someone else in the past and successfully used
in your class?
I would give you one of mine if I had one Andrew but I am in the same boat
as other first year ITA teachers. It seems to me that SACs that others have
used successfully in the past or indeed are using currently are few and far
between. Not any on the VITTA unless you're doing the Software SAC, heaps of
those!

The big question is why? I would have thought that by now there would/should
be plenty. How many ITA teachers are there out there?

If you don't mind Andrew, I wouldn't mind looking at the ones you have.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Andrew!

We've all been down the same road. First time teaching the subject. Not sure
exactly what the study design means! Am I doing the right thing? What help
can I get? Where can I get it?

That is where the ITApps list really helps. You can ask for help and usually
get it.

I was teaching IT when the VCE started. We had CATs - and now SACs. Those of
us teaching at that time had to develop our own CATs and SACs - especially
in non-metropolitan schools, where I was teaching at that time, as we had no
local support. The whole Edulists did not exist and there were no
commercially available resources. I am now retired from full time teaching.

So what am I saying to you?

Don't agonise too much about this SAC. You have two examples already - so,
unless you are not happy with either of them, go with one of those. Modify
of course to suit your students and the software you and they are using.

The SAC has to allow students to demonstrate the required skills- see the
VCAA Assessment Handbook for ITApps at
http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/vce/studies/infotech/InfoTechHB_2007.doc
<http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/vce/studies/infotech/InfoTechHB_2007.doc>

Then really all you have to do is rank the students in order of their
ability to satisfy the requirements for the SAC. The moderation of the
internal assessments via the exam marks takes care of assessment differences
between schools/teachers.

Good luck with SAC 2
