[Year 12 IT Apps] Edulists facts, statistics, myths and more

Gee thanks for all those stats....

I know theyve been going a while..I was also there at the start(or close to it), from memory as one of the earlier users after discovering the lists by accident, I think? Or was it word of mouth? Ahh, so long ago to remember! (back when it was just the I.T. list from memory methinks.)

cheers.

Kent.

Subject: [Year 12 IT Apps] Edulists facts, statistics, myths and more

Hi Kent,

I thank you for your questions and suggestions. Let me start with some facts about Edulists.

The breakdown of all the online communities ( or lists ) as of March 2010 follows in the table below.

Some facts:

1. There are over 5500 subscriptions. Most are Victorians. There is a not insignificant interstate presence and some overseas membership. Some of these are multiple subscriptions.
IT apps would be the most active list in subscriber numbers as well as volume of contributions. Within each "list" membership is unique and active. The server removes inactive/failed addresses after about 5 failures.
2. Edulists was hosted at Forest Hill College beginning in 1996. It was migrated to my home office in 2004. The server lives with me and my family in our home.
3. IT communities/lists comprise 19 of the 47 lists and occupy about 3200 subscriptions representing about 58% of the presence on Edulists.
4. The major sponsor of Edulists is the VCAA. You can thank your VCAA representative next time you speak with your manager such as Paula Christophersen for IT or Margaret Mackenzie Manager of VCE curriculum. Without this support, it would be tough call as to whether Edulists would be here.
5. VITTA is a long time supporter of the IT communities on Edulists and I am a long time admirer of VITTA due to alignment of mission and goals. VITTA commenced sponsorship in 2005 but is currently inactive in sponsorship.
6. A number of subject associations sponsor Edulists. These are listed at the home page www.edulists.com.au<http://www.edulists.com.au>
6. Comprehensive data regarding downloads and visitors ( including historical data ) can be viewed at www.edulists.com.au/awstats/awstats.pl<http://www.edulists.com.au/awstats/awstats.pl>
7. Mailing lists archives show threads and presence of particular contributors.
8. Edulists has web presence for each community/list in addition to an email forum for discussion
9. Edulists has had a number of Eduwikis publically available for about 3 years.
10. Edulists has an upload facility for resources linked from the home page at the top of the tree at www.edulists.com.au<http://www.edulists.com.au>

Some near future proposals:

1. Presence of commercial/private technical solution providers to answer technical questions and make recommendations if asked to do so for individuals and schools as a whole. If a subscriber likes the suggestion they can contact the solution provider off line to follow up further support and/or to request a quote/price or arrange to meet to discuss further.
2. Sponsorship to recognise contributions and support of colleagues by teachers. Gifts of laptop, mobile device and other for support provided to others to be recognised annually.
3. Development of quality support material for teachers either by supporting promotion of existing resources online and/or working on developing new resources.
4. An advertising portal for ANY teacher to promote any commercial resource they have to offer with an ordering facility eg. text book, booklet, training, SACs, etc
5. Further alignment with subject associations to better promote efficiencies in support delivery.
6. Any suggestions how long time beneficiaries of Edulists can be encouraged to put something back into these online communities ???????
7. As Edulists was created to help teachers any other suggestions are welcome.....

Hope this helps paint a better picture of how and what Edulists delivers.
As for the 10 hottest topics over the last 5 years, it would be a matter of stepping through the archives and viewing the sizes/lengths of threads.
One that sticks out in my mind is the MAC vs PC debate that seemed to grow to about 60 posts. I am not sure who won .....

Keep well

Subject: [Year 12 IT Apps] Lists stats suggestion mate...Kent

Hi Kevork,
471 members on the lists?
Any chance of a statistical breakdown by subject? Regular posters compared to Non-regular posters(active vs non-active list participation - based on say, number of posts per month perhaps?).(names not necessary)
It would be an interesting exercise to see the results of such an analysis.
How about a 'top 10' of discussion topics raised over the last 5 years?

Just a few thoughts.

Mate, given my use of these lists..I am prepared to 'donate' a small amount for my part of the list usage as it has provided me with a great professional link to my fellow colleagues on a variety of topics/issues.
And, like yourself, I too am guilty of having made a small number of gaffes on these lists..but then, those who know me, already know I usually lead with my chin(not always recommended practise!)....

keep up the great work and to others reading this...promote these lists and the information they provide!!!!!
To those who just read the lists and rarely participate - we NEED your inputs too! Surely among the 471, there are more than the small number of regulars who have resources and valuable info to contribute..cmon guys and gals..get active and talk to us!

happy easter folks..

Kent Beveridge (lister from way back!)

Hi Folks,

It is great advice you give Mark when a controversial email is about to be sent to just let it sit and gather some dust before actually posting. I know I have regretted certain emails I have written in the past and have tried to correct them to no avail. One in particular caused the accused to be further isolated off line by those who chose one side and continued the attack. When I apologised for the original post and asked the accused to come back - they had chosen to leave the lists upon my not so subtle advice .... - I was asked to take up the fight against those who had continued the attack off line. So messy , so unfortunate, so unnecessary. I wish I could turn back the clock ... but alas.

On a more general point, it is of concern to me that we simply don't get enough of our lurkers to join in our discussions. Latest census shows 471 itapps subscribers. Could it be that they know it all and don't need to ask anything ? Or more ominously could it be that they are afraid they might be shot down if they make a comment ? Anecdotally, I do hear that some feel their work may not be up to the standard they think is on these discussions and hence do not join in.

I am working on acquiring sponsorship to recognise contributions and participation on these lists ( I did think the support and professional satisfaction was enough but maybe not, for many ).
I am looking at a 1st , 2nd and 3rd placement for volume of contributions and support of others over a school year along the lines of a substantial gift for those who help others - a laptop, a powerful mobile device, etc are my preferences.

While I work on the sponsorship front, I want to congratulate Roland, Adrian, Robert, Mark and others for their professional handling of this thread. As Roland said we couldn't see the body language when he was typing and as Adrian mentioned, it took a long, long time to bring together this Study Design that was not so visible to many and the steering committee was of the view every opportunity was afforded for input. The solution to all our woes lies in open honest communication.

Ahhh, first Sunday of our holidays , and we are here working and fighting for the cause. It that a form of the Stockholm/Helsinki syndrome in action ??

Sending this after waiting the requisite 60 mins in the Drafts folder following Mark's wise words.

Warm Regards

Adrian and I get on well off-list so this is nothing personal. I apologize if I have offended anybody with a cavalier quip that I'll admit was casually tacked onto my post without thinking. I'll admit exhaustion and complacency, regretting that I ever hinted an ability to do the interim school reports. It has been good to see this list gain some fire and traction again.

Robert does raise an interesting point that we need to be careful with what voice we speak with, especially from our signature tags. I don't think that Adrian was writing on behalf of VITTA as President and I wasn't writing on behalf of my school. He is quite justified to defend the study design team reputation. I guess for this reason, I have been adding a disclaimer to the bottom of my messages so that I am not giving undue authority to my words or posts.

Regards Roland

Disclaimer: The views in this e-mail are entirely my own. I'll shout a beverage with anybody that meets up with me next week at the national conference and indicates they are from the study design team. :-)

Hi Robert and others,

Robert - you raise a good point - my language was a little strong and for that I do apologise (and also would have been better off-list). I want to categorically state that feedback and discussion is very important and I (personally) want to encourage that as much as I possibly can. Discussion of the study design only furthers all of our understanding of it.

It's just that it frustrates me when comments like this are made off the cuff without the right basis. I also think that discussion should be phrased in the right way - positively - rather than negatively. That is, 'I notice that cloud computing is in the study but I am not sure what the context is? Can someone clarify this for me?'. This would be a fair way to start the discussion rather than saying that there is an omission and implying that no research was done into the topic. I think that there are some dangers in taking summary documents (such as the one that Mark Kelly has created) and using these are a basis for understanding of the study. The study needs to be read in the context of the key knowledge and key skills - Mark's summary is a great tool and should serve as a start only.

I think I am a little sensitive to this knowing how much work has gone into the study and the efforts that VCAA have gone to to involve everyone in the process. The study design is really looking exciting - I can't wait to teach it!

Cheers,
Adrian
