ok now you all have me confused... the original question is critical path the "longest time taken" or the "shortest time taken" and now we are on all different directions still about the same thing but all bouncing around the original question...

I said to my class that the potts book is correct.
If that is not what the examiners are going to look for, can some one help me and tell me what the answer is???? my kids need to be told the truth...

thanks

I agree...yes you can. There may be different tasks(naturally) and potentially more than one way to complete the project. There may thus be different lead or lag times(slack times) as a result of the divergence to one of the (many?) potential paths. If you are being specific, just be aware of this when presenting these potential scenarios to your pupils.

Ah, ya gotta luv critical path analysis(ops research to the mathematitians among us!).

Kent.

Just curious .. can you have two critical paths of exactly the same length (or I am just playing about with words and splitting hairs)?

Both are true. The minimum time to complete all tasks is also the longest path from start to end.

Just depends on which way you look at it.

		Dear All,

a critical path for a project is the series of activites that determine the earliest time by which the project can be completed.

		Emphasis on "earliest time".

In a trial exam my students did some put that the "critical path is the longest path which a project cannot be delayed wthout delaying the entire project"

Emphasis on "longest time". Would this answer be accesptable in an exam?
Is it "earliest time" or "longest path" or both is ok.
		Thank you for any replies.
