[Year 12 IT Apps] Front page question

Thanks Janet, and yes, we are playing 'pretends' but call me old fashioned, I just would like to actually see it working which is why I am trying to 'make that happen', so I can show my charges (oops freudian slip...) errr pupils(removed the original text and replaced with the word 'charges') what I want THEM to understand.
You know, all that stuff about retaining most of what you see, and only some of what you hear! But I bet you dont touch a burning match more than once..
We will most likely use the available templates to get the skeleton of the pages up and running then modify these for the submission.

I say ...there lots of good ideas surfacing about this outcome from our fellow listers!

ps. Where's Patterson River? I seem to have heard about that place somewhere before...

Time to go home now,
I'm late, I'm late, for an important date...! (I wish!!)

Hi Kent, I wrestled with this one too.

Here's what I did. First of all I made up a series of sheets, based on Antonia's Fast Feet Website, then Sheet 5 was about security. (see attached) I got them to simulate a staff login and password then explained that in the "real world", you wouldn't be able to see the links to the rest of the site (or they could be greyed out) until their password was authenticated.

We are playing "pretends" here aren't we? (ie, it doesn't have to actually work is my understanding)

hang in there,

p.s. there's stuff on the sheet about testing and evaluation as well.

As far as I understand it only needs to be a prototype so the site does not actually have to restrict access. I am getting my students to set an action on the form that always takes them to the next page (the restricted site).

Regards

Liam

Hi Kevork, thanks for the response but unless I misunderstand you, you are referring to network management stuff. I can do that at the server (or at least I could when I was a system manager, but not now..). My question relates to creating a secure page entry for the web site that students need to create for OC2.

ie, they create a link to a page on their site, it asks for a password and then, after correct entry of the password they can enter that link.

All ideas welcome...

Hi Kent,

Passwords have to be put in via NTFS persmissions on files on the
server if you are running Win2003 or similar with IIS.
So, go to the server, use Windows explorer or My Computer locate the
file or folder on which you wish to place restrictions, and using right
mouse button, properties, click on the security tab. Add or remove
groups/users to have rights to the folder. User Everyone will need to
be removed if you don't want the ordinary browser user to see the file.
When you add a user to the allowed list, they will use their Win2003
username and password to access the file. Test it on an innocuous file
until you get the hang of it.
A slightly different process applies with a Linux server running a web
server.

 Hope this makes sense

Best Wishes
