[Year 12 IPM] Game Making Software

I use the Clickball tutorial from Bill Kerr http://www.users.on.net/~billkerr/g/clk.htm. Most students, including Year 4, can easily have the game working within 45 minutes - it demonstates most of the basics including scoring, moving and collisions. There are lots of ideas for then expanding the game.

I also then move on to the Maze tutorial pdf version.

cheers

charlie

Ditto what Mike and Rod have said but just a tip.

My strategy would be:
1. download the software
2. Work through 'Tutorial: Your first game' which is Chase the Clown
You'll need to spend about 2 hours yourself going through it
The pdf is very long and some/many of my kids don't like reading!! You
may choose to have some go on their own, and you work through it with a
smaller group (using a projector?)
3. Move to creating Maze games. You get a long pdf, the final result,
and 3 intermediary files. The notes take you through to the first file
(maze_1.gm6) but after that the explanations in the notes are a little
sparse and you need to 'pick apart' maze_2.gm6 and maze_3.gm6 to see how
to achieve certain tasks.
4. Kids move on to platform and/or shooter games

Be careful kids don't spend a long time creating their own sprites. Some
of my kids took great delight in having my image on one of the targets!

There are many gamemaker gurus out there - Tony Forster is but one.
Check the VITTA site - search gamemaker on top right of page.

Can anyone recommend any game making software that is suitable for my
year 9 computer class? Some freeware or shareware would be good.
