I find AUPs valuable because kids can't complain they weren't told what
is right and wrong. I can happily jump on them for a first offence
because they know from day 1 what is and is not allowed.

Our AUP prohibits kids bringing any programs to school or installing
software on college computers - regardless of how it is brought in
(disk, CD, USB key, email, iPod etc).

We let kids bring in USB keys - mainly because our new PCs have no CD or
floppy drives. They understand these drives are subject to random
inspection by staff.

FWIW our AUP is online at

Will we eventually need a graphics calculator acceptable user policy or a compass or blue biro acceptable user policy? They are easily confiscated if they are being misused - not returned until the same lesson the following week is a definite incentive to do the right thing.

Kids are not old enough to sign a legal document and their parents cannot sign a document on their behalf (Something like that anyway!) Although I guess it may act as a deterrent to some.
