I'm saying this as a fan if both OS. There is a reason android hasn't quite made an entrance into education as yet. They seriously need a nexus device, one that can be targeted at education. The current nexus tab, is close but still limited by lack of supporting hardware etc. More below..

I can't more strongly not support the use of android tablets in educational settings for various reasons. I say this having worked in both sides of the fence developing apps for both iphone/iPad and Android

1- most versions of the android software don't allow enterprise wireless connection. This rules out connecting to edustar wireless in most cases. Android ICS allows enterprise connection

The problem with this is that updating android devices is still a tremendously slow process. I'm awaiting software updates on my android phones/tablets Ultimately only the latest tablets are running the latest os

2- the openness of the android system leads to security issues. Fraudulent apps and data mining is rife in the android world with educational apps targeting kids and farming data. Heavens....hadn’t heard that threat before of any OS

You would have to be kidding me. Android OS is rife with security woes. Bringing this open system into a school presents issues. Is apples closed system better? Hmm well yes and no

3- device segmentation leads to less actual apps in the store. Reason being that it becomes increasingly difficult to program android devices. Gobble-de-gook

Again you would have to be kidding me. Segmentation is a joke. It is a complete nightmare to code for. Point being less development into applications. Who wants to code for over 1400 device configs. My latest android app had to target this many apps. Development cost increased.

4- cost. iPad vs Samsung Galaxy tab = iPad win. Any other android tablet is not even worth comparison. Except the google nexus which won't connect to edustar. Whaoa....tested them all have you?

Yes. The ones worth testing that is. Up until ice cream sandwhich there was nothing worth the purchase. I now have a total of 6 android devices. Each of which I really like to varying levels. None of them until jellybean had fluid control nice enough to warrant extensive use. Jellybean is fantastic and I'm certain lime pie will raise the standard again.

5- community. Thousands of educators all using iPads in education, lots of best practice examples and resources. Yeah, yeah, sure.....yawn

Community us hie we cut through the crap and look at best practice. Jump on twitter and see for yourself.

Btw, heaps of win 8 tablets about to hit the market.

I'm Intrigued by what the future holds for these. Surface is superb and I'm looking to begin done development work on them

Bottom line.....find some techs worth their $s (not so easy) and android, or any other solution, is an option.

Hi,
Does anyone use Samsung Tablets as 24/7 1:1 computing devices for their students? We have netbooks for most year levels but the apparent loss of NSSCF funding means we can’t afford to provide netbooks for all levels next year. I was wondering if we might use tablets.

G'day fellow ICT educators

I am hosting the next Teachmeet in a Pub. (now that made you sit up and pay attention) Yes, a #Melbourne pub! You don't have to drink, you can stand around eating peanuts and drinking water if you like. Otherwise, join me to raise a toast to the new year and join me for some nosh afterwards. All the badly dressed IS and ITA teachers will be there.

If you are wondering what is a TeachMeet, well you have to come to find out. They are informal, fun, very informative and a growing movement.

As it is early 2013, it is a good idea to stick the date in your diary. To register interest or offer to run a 2 min talk on a soap box, just add your details to the honour role.
