Thanks Roland

Surely the Myki doesn't rely on continuous access to a network? From memory
the UK Oyster card (and I think the French Passe Navigo Découverte) is a
stored-value card and each in-vehicle transaction just deducts from its
stored total on the card, the vehicle does not continously talk to a
central transaction centre. This is an established technology. A real-time
card to central office system would be a major design challenge (and a
strange decision).

Re the free access to public transport - if Google's autonomous car leads
to a commercial product, maybe the concept of a drivers licence will
vanish. Kids could be taken to school by the vehicle, without a "driver"...
