Subject: [Design and Technology] set up

Hi all,
Our school is going through a review this year and I have been given the task to look at specialist subjects in the middle school.
Currently we have the following system within Design Technology but are looking into other options that maybe possible.

Year 7 – 1, 70 minute period per week for Design Technology (Wood, ,Metal, Plastics & CAD) for 1 semester. Then the next semester the same in Food and Fabrics.
Year 8 – 3, 70 minute periods per fortnight for Design Technology (Wood, ,Metal, Plastics & CAD) for 1 semester. Then the next semester the same in Food.
Years 7 and 8 are compulsory but from Year 9 onwards it is an elective subject.

I am not sure if this is the norm or if other schools have a different set up. Any suggestions/information to feedback would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Stuart
