[Design and Technology] berninas

Hi, i have both and find each has advantages and disadvantages.
1008 solid and lasts for ages - easy maintenance, not necessarily a machine many students would have access too at home - though this could be said for the other too. Students can find adjusting settings a liitle harder. Ive got some very old and new ones of these.
215 also solid, have had one since first released and no issues other than cover over takeup lever can make it difficult to thread - if only it could be moved aside for threading. Easier to modify settings for beginners and love the magnifying attachment which is fantastic for vision impaired students - have had a number of legally blind students learn on this one.
I also have a variety of janomes, mainly due to budget but also because cheaper versions students had more access to at home. They dont last all that well and can say in the past ten years all but two ancient bernina repairs have been with the janome machines.
I would question the price though. Ask for the school price, ive always found it to be significantly better.

Claire

Hi all,

Help needed - I need to buy 10 bernina sewing machines for yr 9 students

Is the 215 suitable or should I stay with the 1008. There is $1000
difference between the two ie. 1008 is $1800 and 215 is on sale for $999

Please help me as I am a product design - wood teacher but have to make this
decision

Thanks

Hi Robin,

I would definitely recommend the 1008. WE have them service annually at $30 each and they usually last us at least 10 -12 years. Worth the investment, the plastic ones just can't take the hard knocks.

Regards,
Melissa

The 1008's were there before me and I think they will out live me. They are
the perfect work horse for schools.

We use both Bernina & Brother $150 from Spotlight.
It gives the kids a variety of machines & difference in bobbin placement. Stitching etc. we have had the 10 Brothers for 5years & still work fine.
Easy to fix & maintain.
