Lisa is absolutely correct.

Unit 1 – INDIVIDUAL modification of an existing product to improve function, sustainability and aesthetic appeal.

Unit 2 – TEAM (3 -4) design and production of a product or product range that shows influence of a design movement or period in the 20th Century and considers Human Centred Design.

Hope this helps.

Dear Robin,

I would not anticipate that your ideas fulfil the requirements. My understanding is that Unit 1 has a focus on REdesign and on sustainability and requires students to work individually on recreating an improved protoype of a particular product. Unit 2 is quite different and requires teams rather than pairs. The focus is very much on team work, on the influence of specific design periods, and human wants/needs design factor. Unit 2 is a challenging unit to run for 16 to 17 year olds but mirrors the spirit of design in industry. Unit 1 too is relevant to design practice in industry also, but both are markedly different.

Is it acceptable and does it fit in with the Study design for students to work in pairs for both Units 1 & 2 producing a single product by the end of Unit 1 and then again working in the same pairs to produce the additional
‘duplicate’ product in Unit 2. Over the year they will only develop 1 folio and one product per student.

My understanding is they work on an individual product and create this along with the folio by the end of Unit 1 and then in unit 2 work collaboratively to develop another product.
