[Design and Technology] OHS space requirements in workshops

It is also going to depend on the amount of available floor space in the
room. What size benches do you have and what other furniture is in the room?
The students need their own safe work space at a bench and adequate room to
move without interfering with other students when they have to move around.
We are working in an area were the students need to move around so the whole
layout and design of the workshop needs be considered and managed. You then
need to consider the nature of the activities you students are performing.
Year 7 projects may not require as much space as a year 12 project. Year 7
students don’t take up as much space as year 10 students but you might have
more of them. I have often thought that our standard Department workshop
should be twice the size when year 9 and 10 have all their projects going.
It would be nice to see some examples of best practices.

It all comes down to assessing risks and justifying the control measures (in
this case, room size) for your individual application. Rules & regulations
now are no longer prescriptive ("thou shalt..."), but performance-based,
which divests the department's responsibility for OHS and becomes the
principal's or HOD's responsibility. Using the "blue book" or other
information would be a good starting point in assigning room sizes, etc...
but if a principal or HOD cannot justify the decisions they made and an
accident occured, then it is their head on the block. Identifying hazards,
assessing the risk & justifying control measures in writing, whilst
cumbersome & onerous, will cover your rear end.

I am sure we would all like to see that one. Most of the information put out
by the Department concerns the safe use of machinery. However there must be
some guidelines for architects for the design of the Trade Training centres
about how much space should be available per student in a Technology room.
It also comes down to how many the principal thinks should be in the room.
Were "practicable" I believe is the expression.
Below is a link to information that is available to NSW Industrial Arts
Teachers regarding machinery safe work areas.

Would anyone have information regarding OHS safety requirements and how to
calculate workshop space required per student (in Victoria)?
I have heard of a "blue book" in NSW which outlines all such information. Is
there some equivalent source in Victoria?
