³Dimensions of the Plane² Communication Design in Germany
18 February 13 March 2009

The only Australian showing of this important exhibition of contemporary
communication design opens at the Australian Academy of Design on February
18.

Brought to Australia by the Goethe-Institut Australia and German Design
Council, this exhibition includes leading German designers and represents
the full strength and scope of two-dimensional communication design in the
21st century.

Communication design can be defined as the language of visual characters,
symbols and images which help us navigate our way through the information
jungle. The exhibition subject matter is divided into 5 main sections
representing graphic design, digital media, corporate design, wayfinding &
signage systems, and typography.

The exhibition includes approximately 150 recent works by influential
designers such as Johannes Erler, Mike Meiré, Joachim Sauter, Erik Spiekmann
and Andreas Uebele. Their particular strengths and specialisations highlight
the five principles of two-dimensional communication design.

It captures where current trends come from and reflects on the effect of
graphic and visual designs of the past continues to the present day. The
powerful impact of logos, pictograms, typefaces or systems often only
becomes apparent when they have been making their mark over for decades: the
Deutsche Bank logo designed by Anton Stankowski in 1974, for example, or Otl
Aicher¹s pictograms originally designed for the Munich Olympics in 1972,
or the DIN typeface that directs drivers on German autobahns.

An Opening Night and media viewing will be held on Wednesday 18 February
6.30-8pm at 220 Ingles St, Port Melbourne. The exhibition is open to the
public 9am-5pm Mon-Fri until 13 March.

The Australian Academy of Design is a not-for-profit higher education
provider delivering the Bachelor of Design Arts degree with major studies in
Advertising, Fashion Design, Graphic Design, Photo Media and Visual Arts.
