Nicholas Negtoponte is the founder of the MIT Media Lab. He has been heavily involved in education and technology for years.

Have a look at him speaking at the TED talks http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/view/id/41

I personally don't care what his motivation is if it's decreasing the gap between the education of the have and have not's. It's a fantastic program that can be used in education to highlight the way design, open source software and technology can assist to educate those less fortunate.

Saw the story about the laptops...
Personally, I think the whole thing is one big PR item for all those concerned. The classic question that made me laugh was when asked what was in it for the designer(cant remember his name..Dr. something I think..) and he said nothing..rubbish! talk about a windfall of potential business if the contracts get signed..ummm intellectual property mate! der. just as a starter....plus a cut from the 'chinese' manufacturer...what are they getting for making these ....sorry , getting on my hobby horse...must stop....
