Hey, I know, make those pathetic excuses for laptops(just my opinion) of the wind-up variety, like some torches!
Oops that'd make them more expensive again, wouldn't it?

Personally, they value food, clean running water, the ability to stay clean and relatively healthy and mostly, can put a roof over their family's head. The better off usually live closer to towns, send their kids to bigger schools and 'funnel' (channel?) some of the funds supposedly given to those who really 'need' it! Blind freddie would realise that if all the money and food sent there got there, then they'd be far far better off than they are currently.
What can I say? Political and Military clout get first dibs on the international aid...what hope have a few measely laptops got?

Yep ..I agree...give them good reading and writing skills and then you've empowered them!

I'm sorry but they need pencils and paper ...not laptops... is the west really that delusional that we think people in "developing nations" would even have somewhere to plug it in. Give me a break...The programs heart is in the right place I guess. But I think that somewhere like amnesty would be a much better place to put your money.

(might be of interest re OLPC)

You are receiving this email because you requested a reminder from One Laptop per Child about our limited-time "Give One Get One" program. Starting Monday, November 12 at 6:00am EST, you will be able to donate one XO laptop to a child in the developing world and also receive a laptop for the child in your life, by visiting www.laptopgiving.org <http://link.laptopgiving.org/u.d?PGTWeR2ANuI_RF3en=411> or calling toll-free 1-877-70-LAPTOP.

"Give One Get One" is the only time we are making the revolutionary XO laptop available to the public. For a donation of just $399 ($200 of which is tax-deductable), you will be giving the gift of education. Additionally, T-Mobile is offering donors one year of complimentary access to T-Mobile HotSpot locations throughout the United States, which can be used from any Wi-Fi-capable device, including the XO laptop.

We will send you another email when the program begins on November 12. Until then, thank you for your interest in OLPC. We hope you'll join us in our mission to bring education and connection to children in even the most remote regions of the globe.
