[Yr7-10it] RE: Yr7-10it Digest, Vol 34, Issue 47

I live in Bendigo and I'm not sure what I think about this

Why?

I don't teach at Bendigo Senior Secondary, but it has had a strong
tradition of ICT PD (navconn, ICT festivals etc) but even there the last
ICT festival - held for the whole town and the region - was a bit of a
fizzer - they had to cancel most of the sessions

I couldn't help thinking the teacher interest in this sort of approach
has gone through a bit of a dip - maybe akin to the dip in student
enrolments

Not sure why - but that's my first issue - we might be able to broadcast
(how well?) but having great content that people really want is another
issue

(even if its working ok, the remote thing will lessen the quality, so it
will needs to be really good content to work remotely)

But personally, while I'd attend this sort of thing in person, I don't
know that I'd sign up for it, if it was remote -

My reservations :

(1) skill development is pretty easy to get anywhere on the internet I
reckon (IT content is not that compelling - a little time reading can go
as far)

(2) the nature of these training sessions is likely to not translate
overally well to remote connection (can we see each other? and/or each
other's screens?

(I like the technology - I did a video conference between parts of my
family on Christmas day - but I'm not sure it makes for a good session
like this).

Have been trained via phone and remote desktop and that worked well -
and I sometimes solve problems for people like that - but is a one to
one thing; not sure how that would work for a group

Also used some commercial stuff - WebEx - even at best its doesn't seem
like a great training tool for software training

Potential

Rob
