Hi Kashum,

Apologies for the delay in replying but I have been out of school all day.

I have tried to work out why the increase in IT numbers and I think it is a combination of many factors.

• We introduced GameMaker into Year 9 as a major part of the course. This has been a great success.
• We rewrote the Year 10 course to include Flash, web authoring and Web 2.0 tools (and deleted GameMaker).
• The College introduced a "First 10 minutes" program where all teachers were required to focus on engaging students in (obviously) the first 10 minutes of every lesson. The IT teachers have used the Internet, YouTube, etc with great success.
• We have arranged as many excursions for our students as possible this year. Forty (yr 9 and 10) students attended the VITTA Careers Expo. We have been extremely grateful that we have been able to send selected (ie nominated high achieving) students to Swinburne Uni's ICT Outreach program incl. Girls in IT and ICT High Achievers program as well as ITA and SD workshops. Also Dr Catherine Lang, Associate Dean (Student Engagement), attended our school and spoke to our Year 10s about Web 2.0 . A sincere thank you to Bianca van Meeuwen (Outreach Officer) and Swinburne Uni for arranging such great programs.
• The new Senior School was opened this year and the new computer rooms have given us great physical resources to use eg IWBs etc.
• The new VCE Study Design has given me many opportunities to "showcase" student work and VCE IT content to the wider community via newsletters, online displays etc. In particular I have been able to display topics that appeal to the students eg on-line communities, types of websites, data visualisations, careers presentations, etc.
• We always send a large contingent (80 students) to the “Go Girl, Go for IT” conference run by the Victorian ICT for Women and held at Deakin Uni every second year. It will be held on 18th and 19th June in 2012. I already have girls who attended in 2010 (as Year 9s) putting their names down for next year.

I have attached two infographics that have been produced by my Year 11 students for U2O1 Data Visualisation (which we taught last because we were so unsure of what to do). This topic has certainly caught me by surprise. The students were so interested that the eventually spent double the allocated time. Once again thank you to the VITTA presenters who inspired me with their Data Visualisation presentations.

Many thanks

Congratulations Judy. This looks like the healthiest IT numbers since 2000 at my school. Last year I offered VET Media as a new subject and our IT class were affected. We will have a combined class of Y11 and 12 Vet Media and a combined class of Y11 IT and Software Development.

It will help us greatly if you shared your ideas about your promotion strategies and how you teach ICT in middle years.

Hi everyone,

We just received the IT numbers for next year.

76 students have selected Units 1 & 2 IT! That is 24 more than this year.
I think we are all in shock.

Also 2 x ITA classes and 1 x SD (which was expected).

Many thanks
