Another source of help is to talk to your Vis Comm and Art teachers. They teach these things all the time. Just be aware that they have some different terms for the same thing and also include some additional elements and principles that we don't specifically mention. If you show them the list that Marian posted last night, I'm sure they could give you a good crash course and lots of examples.
I even showed my art dept some examples of visual design questions from past exams, so they could see what our kids have to know.
I also find it's good to be friends with your Physics teacher when doing audio and Psychology teacher when looking at colour. Word them up on what your kids are doing and invite them in as guest speakers.
