Oh, 

I forgot to mention the key point about this suggestion. Because your 
students are just creating PowerPoint-style slideshows, there's no need to 
train them with anything else, certainly nothing as complex as Macromedia 
Studio MX suite. 

This may or may not be a bonus - only you can tell ;-)
