Hi Folks,

It seems the relevant section is:
(supplied earlier ... thanks )
http://www.copyright.org.au/information/cit005/cit073/wp0042 ..
You are unlikely to be able to copy the contents of a DVD without circumventing an Access-control Technological Protection Measure (ATPM), and thus contravening prohibitions in the Copyright Act

So that says it all I guess as I wouldn't expect a commercial DVD to not have some copy protection so any attempt to copy it to be illegal.

So, do any schools have a video/DVD pool to access for student use ? or commercial products that can do the job ?

Kind Regards

We’re allowed to copy it, in any form, if its for educational use.
Except when its a DVD with copy protection measures.

The rules vary according to whether we’re talking about TV, books, music, downloads, VHS or DVD, J.

The general ‘educational use’ bit is always trumped by any more specific clause, such as ‘access’ TPM. That includes trying to watch Foxtel without hiring one of their set top boxes, as well as ripping a commercial DVD.

Interestingly, unlike America, it is now legal to circumvent regional TPM, so using a player firmware hack or computer software to get around Regional Coding of DVDs is fine.

Cheers,
Clarky
