p.s.

Also we did not charge fro stuff out of our cache - so we encouraged
teachers to visit sites first so it was cached for the students

We did charge for stuff out of the upline cache because it came in over
our link but our provider charged less for stuff out of their cache
which contributed to the lower cost

Charge 10c Mb download. $6 combined notional printing and internet
credit per semester. After this students pay $5 lots to top up their
account. All intranet access is free. Teachers are encouraged o
download material rather than send students "out to get it" all the
time. About 20% of students pay extra. Probably drop the charge as Mb
costs decrease and MB download increases with VicSmart.......

How extra downloads make us "Smart" is anyone's guess ?? Didn't seem to
work for more TV hours....

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for the feedback, am curious as to how you charged the students
for Internet usage - do these software packages measure downloads? How
much do you charge? Do you invoice he students? Block them from using
the internet if they haven't paid?

Shane

Hi Shane

I have used Gaia and papercut for both printing and internet charging.

Both were fine for printing, both add print value by using vouchers
purchased from business manager/ bursar and printed out by IT staff

Papercut was superior for internet charging as it updated every 10
minutes, The older version of GAIA only updated once per day, I do not
have recent experience with the latest version of GAIA and internet
charging.

Just be careful of the share where the data is held as the encryption
key for gaia is, by default, stored in the data folder...... as students
here found out!

Hi All,

I would appreciate some feedback on what other schools are using to
manage there printing costs with students - Software and or policies.
How effective is it and how do you manage student payment.

Thanks
