Subject: [Year 12 IT Apps] Perhaps off-topic - NASA City Lights 2012

Hi all

I originally saw this on the Diigo Ed list (but no mention of this issue), but stumbled across it again on the ABC site:
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-12-12/explore-nasas-black-marble-earth-at-night/4423768
(Explore the Earth at night using this interactive version of new high-resolution satellite imagery from NASA.)

Zoom in on the west of Australia and look at all the lights!
Tick off the City Lights 2012 box and there's NOTHING there (we all know that!)

Any explanation for ALL those lights? Is it a data error (seems unlikely and not obvious in other continents that you expect to be "empty"). Mining??

It's nearly the last week so we ALL have LOTS of time to ponder this!

Regards
