Subject: [Year 12 IT Apps] Re: U4-O1 - Visual Representation

I am struggling to think of a way to help students understand the Visual
Representation. I tried to make up a grid to help them -

a) think of some of the decisions that they had to make (not every
decision as this is impossible - but a good range)

b) talk about the options they had (and the criteria they used to choose
one)

c) Tell me the solution, discuss why they chose that, and then talk
about whether it was effective.

QUESTION - What decisions did you have to make?
OPTIONS - what did you think about when solving the question?
SOLUTION - what did you choose and why? Was it effective and why?

Some of the questions we came up with are:

Which design tools will I use?
Where will the logo go?
How many worksheets will I need?
What size font will I use for the heading?
What information needs to go on each sheet?
Which formula do I need to use to work out the percentage?
How do I work out the totals?
How can I make this solution easy to use for the users (who is the
audience?)
What type of on-line user documentation do the users need?
What software will I use to make the documentation?
How will I decide what needs to go on the documentation?

Am I on the right track as far as the 'thinking' part of the Visual
Representation? I'd appreciate any feedback (first year ITA teacher,
this one has thrown me!)

Hi all. This discussion is better suited to the tech thread.

Let's steer this list back to ITA, which should become rather more
animated now the exam is coming up fast.

The representation of thinking is supposed to cover _all_ the thinking
in the spreadsheet and documentation (which is rather optimistic, I
believe: this sort of thing does not come easily to kids).

I suppose it doesn't matter how many diagrams they use to do the job, as

long as the major thinking, decisions and actions are represented.

I hope the representation of thinking does not have to represent the
thinking involved in representing their thinking. Recursion always gives

me a headache.

Yet another problem has reared its ugly head in relation to the new R61
notebook computers. It seems the notebook division, in its infinite
wisdom, installed a generic graphics driver which will not let Microsoft
Movie Maker run because it does not support the required hardware
acceleration.

I went to the Lenovo site, downloaded the appropriate driver and
installed it. Problem solved!

Why in the hell was that not done by the experts(?) who prepared the
image? I am tired of either me or my technical staff doing these jobs
that should have been done in the beginning.

Hi Ros,

I like Switch Proxy for Firefox and didn't know about IE7Pro. As for the
wireless connection, I think our Cisco system is OK somehow! I mentioned
in my first post that DEECD had created a lovely home machine - no
problems with cheap domestic wireless routers etc. The main issue is the
work our techies are having to do to 39 machines to have them barely
operable in our environment.
