[Year 12 IPM] Contributors invited to attach photo to assist in putting faces to names.

Dear Keith,

    I haven't forgotten your request to see if we can have a photo with each 
email contribution.
When an email is sent - and these mailing lists are just an engine for 
distributing emails - posts go to subscriber's mailboxes. They are not 
centrally collated for all to view like web forums . In fact there is very 
little information held about a subscriber on the mail server, except for an 
email address and a few options. The server is not constructed as a forum 
and not geared to store objects like photos.

Why not somehow change your system to allow for storage of photos I hear you 
ask ??

The answer is it would then have to become a web forum. Emails would not 
necessarily keep coming into each person's mailbox but be stored centrally 
and to access a list, subscribers would have to go into the central forum to 
see what is new. Sure, reminders could be sent out but the action would then 
happen in a web environment and not a mailing list as we have it now. The 
implications of that are individual accounts for each subscriber, 
maintenance of these accounts and having to log in each time to this web 
based structure to catch up with what is happening versus having all 
messages come to you into your mailbox to do with what you like.

So what to do  ?
Why not invite contributors to attach a photo of no more than 100KB to 
emails that can then be viewed to put faces to names ?  If any attempt to 
attach any large images is made there is an automatic block at 1 MB as with 
any attachment. Therefore, let us start by attaching our photo to the emails 
as a way of getting to know each other.

To entirely ditch the mailing lists and move to a web based forum would 
change the whole character of the mailing lists. If people did not log in , 
they would not be up to date.

With mailing lists it is the server's job to distribute the new posts and 
not the subscriber's to keep logging in to see what is happening.
So, perhaps we can start by setting an example and posting an attached photo 
for others to identify us.
