[Year 12 IPM] formats & conventions

Hello Margaret

I don't think it's that simple to produce separate lists. As Mark said, formats are about structure and layout, and even about media, while conventions are about 'rules'. Because conventions are about 'rules' they are not just about what happens 'inside' a given format but can govern formats themselves; eg the way a business letter is laid out describes its format, but that format follows a particular convention (date and addressee at the top, no punctuation outside the body of the letter etc); you may choose to display temperature and rainfall stats in a graphical format, but convention says what kind of graph you should use. Moreover, there are conventions that go across many formats, eg the idea of 'heading hierarchy'.

I still have students who seem to mix up formats and conventions. Has anyone created a list that clearly lists examples of formats separate to examples of conventions? The document I have lists formats and conventions for various publications under the joint heading without separating the two.
