[Yr7-10it] Year 7-10 Digital technologies - Australian curriculum

We have a compulsory semester of Year 7 Digital Technologies (first semester) and a compulsory semester of Year 8 Digital Technologies (2nd sem) to help with loadings. The other half of the year is Design Technologies (at both 7 and 8). Same time allocation is given to both 7 and 8 Design Tech, as is the case with DigiTech. We have 5 hours in a 2 week cycle (3 x 100 minute periods) per semester.

We currently do:

- Digital Workspace (acclimatisation to our system and hardware)

- Cybersafety & Web Development

- Digital Impacts

- Data Visualisations

- Algorithms and Programming

- Computers and Networks

We then have Year 9 Digital Tech as a game-focused algorithms and programming course, with a Year 10 Software Design subject teaching algorithms and programming (and a mini-SD SAT).

Keen to discuss further off list if necessary.

Hi John,

No planning yet as that’s why I went out to the list, but I will start over the next few weeks as I have to put together something for subject selection evenings. Do any other listers run these classes as electives or do most schools run Digital Technology as a compulsory subject? I’d like some anecdotal evidence for the boss!

Maybe we can get a few people together for a planning session at some stage?

Subject: [Yr7-10it] Year 7-10 Digital technologies - Australian curriculum

Hi All,

As a member of an independent school, we are a bit slow on the uptake when it comes to the Australian Curriculum. Next year I am pushing to get a Year 8 Digital Technology course and a Year 9 Digital Technology course. We already teach “Digital Entrepreneurship” at Year 7 and in Year 10 I get students to undertake Units 1 and 2 Computing as otherwise I wouldn’t have a VCE class, hence I am now targeting Year 8 and Year 9.

I am trying to put together a proposal for the classes next year – Does anyone have any timelines on putting the year 7/8 DigiTech curriculum into a single year course, and the same for year 9/10? I may not be able to include all of the content from a two year band but single year electives are the best I’ve been offered at the moment! I’ve just sources the 7/8 and the 9/10 Digital Technologies books from Nelson Cengage so can use them as a reference, and even have students purchase them as part of the course if required.

Thanks in advance,

Trav
