As Suzanne said, Gamemaker is a great place to start.
http://sandbox.yoyogames.com/make/tutorials has lots of information and
some easy games - and "The Gamemakers' Apprentice" might be worthwhile
buying or trying to grab a .pdf copy for some ideas.

I started my class with the First Game then proceeded to the First Game,
etc. As long as I was a game or two ahead, everything went well!

I also bought the Natcoll Gamemaker 8.1 Lite book for some ideas and that
was also terrific.

I hope this helps; my students have loved it all although they haven't
been too willing to 'experiment' for themselves so have just about drained
my brain over the semester.

Good luck
