In our region we have implemented netbooks for Grade 6 students in every
primary and P-12 school as part of the DEECD netbook trial
<http://www.education.vic.gov.au/management/ictsupportservices/netbooks/
netbooktrial.htm> . Many schools also bought netbooks for their grade 5
students. These netbooks go home with students and is built around a co
contribution model between parents, DEECD and the region.

Two things are currently happening now. Secondary schools are preparing
for the influx of a large number of netbooks (every Yr 7 will have one)
in 2010.

Secondly, the trial has been such a success so far almost every primary
school in the region is looking to purchase/ lease netbooks to their
Grade 5/6 students in 2010. I am currently investigating netbooks and
service provided to schools for their maintenance and repairs to support
this across the region.

It has been huge and overwhelmingly has been a positive experience this
year. Our movement into Year 7 will be interesting with lots of new
challenges.

There are some very useful websites that have been developed as part of
the trial that might be of use to you

http://netbooktrial.wikispaces.com/

http://www.aalf.org/

Both these sites have a wealth of information about 1 to 1.

I would be happy to talk with you more about what we have learned so
far.

cheers

Colleagues

There is a great resource available to all schools although rarely
considered by people in this Kevork et al's situation.

There might be a private school nearby that has used laptops for quite
some time and I think it would be worthwhile to pick the brains of the
IT person in charge, like me.

We (established laptop schools) have made all the mistakes, assumptions
and bad calls that are worth avoiding when you introduce laptops.

Or I invite people to give me a call or even make a visit (if close
enough) to see a laptop program in action.

Thanks Kevork for starting the discussion. We are also looking at it but
having a great range of discussion as to what year level we give too. We
can only fund one year level. Some have said that Year 10 would be
better, I argue that year 7 because they may have been exposed to them
in primary school. (Primary schools in our region were given netbooks
for year 5s and some of the small schools bought them for year 6 also).

I have heard that the insurance is quite expensive.

Any input for other would be helpful. LWT suggested that you ensure you
get one with a hard case.

Hi Folks,

Sorry for the cross posts.

We are at an important crossroad/milestone in our school regarding
Netbooks/Laptops/Notebooks for Year 7 next year.

We are committed to introducing new Netbooks/Laptops/Notebooks in 2010
which students keep, take home, are responsible for and need to manage.
I know it sounds like horse before cart but we are determined to make it
work.

We are keen hear from any other school expecially regarding any
pitfalls, issues, preferred choices for brands, reliability, service,
software and hardware, application installations, warranties etc etc.

I would say feel free to email me off list but I am sure others would
like to hear about these experiences for their own research also.

As usual if none of this interests a subscriber there is the delete
button.

With thanks
