Thanks Therese,

Yes - unfortunately, 'The IT Mob' on SBS didn't really cut it in terms of
making the ICT sector more attractive to students!! We can only hope one
will come along!

Cheers,

Adrian

Hello Adrian

Thank you very much for this resource. I intend to use it extensively to
highlight to the girls that ICT is a terrific career to enter into. At the
commencement of the school year, we were presented with statistics of where
the Class of 2006 went onto with regards to their tertiary choices, and
unfortunately I don't recall any students studying an IT course. In sharp
contrast, when I worked in boys schools, the boys would choose an IT course
even at TAFE level as a fall back plan...especially if they did not get into
the course of their choice!

Just as TV shows have made some careers irresistible such as CSI
(Forensics), Greys Anatomy (Medicine), LA Law (Lawyers) etc, perhaps we need
a TV show that will sex up ICT and students will flock to it, and classrooms
will be bursting with eager students wanting to do ICT again!! Those were
the good old days! I guess we can only dream!!

Regards

Therese

Hi everyone (and apologies for the cross posts)

I have just uploaded a presentation on ICT careers to the VITTA web site -
it is about 1.3MB in size. Here is the link:

http://www.vitta.org.au/resources/detail.php?doc_id=3140

One of the things that I am passionate about VITTA 'doing better' is helping
promote ICT careers to students in Victoria and giving teachers as much
assistance as possible to get this done. Earlier this year we met with
representatives of the Australian Computer Society in order to find out some
concrete things about the ICT industry in Victoria (and indeed, Australia).
The information that we were able to obtain is contained in this
presentation and makes for very interesting reading!

We all know that there are opportunities in the ICT industry, but our
students are not getting the message. We are fighting a number of battles -
students still think the ICT industry is reeling from the 'dot-com' crash,
careers teachers and parents often give advice that steers students away
from ICT subject choices and the media is not really aware of the needs of
the industry (choosing instead to focus more 'news worthy' topics such as
the out-sourcing to foreign countries).

VITTA has a number of things planned to promote ICT careers to students.
This presentation is one of the first resources we will be providing to you.
Please feel free to show this to all of your classes - no matter the year
level. Other teachers such as coordinators and careers advisers may also
wish to make use of it. I would love to get your feedback on the
presentation - and by all means, please let me know if you find anything
that can be added to it, and if you want to suggest ways in which it can be
improved.

All the best!
