We use the version below WSS 3.0 as a small intranet. We have a setup called helpdesk which is the default page when teachers open their web browser. Many staff post announcements of upcoming events and the person in charge of the meeting calendar uses the events section, unfortunately some admin people run their own meeting schedule using word tables to create paper printout and this ruins the effectiveness of having a centralised calendar. We also have a white board calendar in the staffroom.

Under the document links we have folders for school policy and procedure documents, daily extras, parent and staff newsletters, ict documents. I did try and encourage kla areas to set up a series of links for their policy documents for year levels and subjects but this was not very successful as the school already has a server for curriculum with folders created.

Survey area and discussion lists have not been used very much at this stage and there is little interest in these features in the foreseeable future.

We also have links to websites such as recruitemnt on line, edumail and task links to ICT, and maintenance fault reporting pages. I also place a link for timetabling where file updates for the first class timetable, and other tt related documents are stored. There is a pd link, but coordinators find it easier to place announcements on the main page, otherwise teachers may never visit your page.

We use an electronic roll marking system which also links from the helpdesk. We run bookit for booking AV resouces, meeting rooms, computer rooms and other school resources. this is also linked from the helpdesk

The students have their own version, with read access only and calendar of school events, announcement about meetings, or careers, and a series of links for library, careers, maths, humanities, science. Teachers also use the picture option to provide a slide show gallery of school activities. We currently have 3000+ pics. I recently installed an interactive humanites cd on the network and linked to the start page from the students helpdesk, it worked well, but I don't think it has sound on the original.

One section of the students helpdesk is for a school newspaper and students have a small group who have the rights to add content and have a discussion forums, and add new members, i am a bit concerned about adequate supervision of their area.

One small problem is that only one person can be set to get email notification of new content etc and as different people are responsible for links, or document sections we turned off this email reporting feature. I understand that this has been improved on the new version?

We can now access this system from home and upload work for students.

Hi All,

Our school (Carrum Downs Secondary College) has just got Windows Sharepoint WSS 3.0 up and running in our server for team collaboration. Because we are still a novice user to it, our IT technician likes to get and share more ideas and learn more techniques and features related to it from other schools who are running the same in their server. I would welcome any sort of response to this including its benefits or drawbacks and someone who is using it if not you.

Thanks and Regards,

Arivu Kumaran
