Dear colleagues

As you are aware this year the VCAA introduced this year a new study VCE Algorithmics - this is classified as a Higher Education Scored Study (HESS) to differentiate it from Extension studies undertaken by students at university during year 12. Scores in these studies (assessment undertaken by the university) can contribute on an incremental basis to a student's ATAR but they cannot be counted as a VCE scored study, hence be in the student's primary four scores for their ATAR.

VCE Algorithmics (HESS) is a scored study and is pitched at first-year university standard. It is the only study of its kind in the VCE, and this year we have nine schools offering the study, one of which is Distance Education Victoria Centre. Interestingly, 30 per cent of the students are females - this is a statistic that has not been enjoyed by VCE IT for many years. Given the rigorous standard of the study, the VCAA in conjunction with Monash University and the University of Melbourne provide both on-going and once-off professional support for Algorithmics teachers.

If your school is interested in offering Algorithmics in the near future (or if you know your school could not run a class but you have some potential students in mind who could study through Distance Education) you might want to participate in the following free two-day workshop on 29 and 30 October at the University of Melbourne. Note: preference is given to teachers who either intend to offer the study in 2016 or 2017.

Details of the workshop and the registration link are provided in the September issue of the VCAA Bulletin:

The Algorithmics study design is located at: http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Pages/vce/studies/algorithmics/algorithmicsindex.aspx

Please contact me if you have any further queries.

Paula
