Hi Esther,

The connection through Netspace is slow but not THAT slow, at least in our experience. I'd be getting the techs to have a good look at your router settings.
Re offline data sets, one that you can get easy access to is the schools electricity account ring the power company and they will supply it in .csv form). The meters in schools monitor at 15 min intervals and send it off by a cellular data transponder attached to the power board. You can actually find out some quite interesting stuff with a decent visualisation...just a thought.

Yes, the department gives us a 100Mbps pipeline, and our service provider gives us a trickle of data along it.
It's like being given a new 8 lane freeway and a mule to use on it.
We alleviate things by having an ADSL connection to a 'real' ISP for the techies to use for their BIG data transfers...

It's a shame that many of these good data sources can't be downloaded or even cached.
Maybe try to find a data source which you can store locally?

Our school joined the Department's internet portal (terminology?) at the start of this year. I am finding it is too slow for students to do research. This Outcome 1 requires students to "select appropriate sources of data and identify relevant data". Last year I gave them a list of websites that contained a range of datasets and asked them to select their data. Our web access is so slow I don't think I can do that this year.

Has slow web access been an issue for any of you in government schools?

If so, how are you addressing this? Are you providing the students with the datasets?
(I really don't want to do this, but the situation here is intolerable!!)

Thanks,
Esther
