I think you would have to use conditional formatting.  I have attached an example using Office 2007.  Not sure if the same range of options is available in previous versions.

Hi Sylvia
1.Select the cells that you want to check (eg B5:B60)
2.Select "Format" then "Conditional Formatting" from the Menu
3.Change "Cell Value Is" to "Formula Is"
4.Type in the formula =RIGHT(B5,1)="x" - Note type in the cell reference
of whichever cell is first in the list you have selected and use
relative reference not absolute reference so that the formula will
change for the other cells automatically.
5.Click on the Format button then change the pattern to whichever colour
you want
6. Click OK a couple of times and Voila!
