[Yr11 Information Technology] Re: Unit Two: Outcome One

Is it necessary to combine the programming component of the outcome with
the opportunities and pathways component or could they be set as two
separate "SAC's". I was thinking of setting my year 11's an
investigation into a specific IT career/pathway (one each - class of 13)
and getting them to present their findings to the group. At present I
am timetabled into an IT lab that has no programming software on the
PC's (yes, I know!) and will need to wait till next term to start
programming anyway....

Well done Anton, it is a bit of an eye opener for our students when you
do
this. We had some fun getting BEOS, Ubuntu, Windows 1.0 and Windows98 up
and
running with VMWare.

I was suprised how it engaged some of the year 11 girls who enjoyed
showing
off how much quicker they could navigate and do things compared to the
gaggle of sad, lost lads who struggled once they were away from their
more
familiar home computer setup. A boy noted that they only permit their
sisters to have a 'guest' account because of the supposed 'damage' that
might be done. They ate humble pie. :-)

I agree that Unit 1 outcomes are very hard to fit in! Students generally
need more time to cover databases well.

I taught the skills for the first outcome, then quickly went over the
third outcome theory, relying on the skills learnt in outcome one to
produce a website using Dreamweaver. I provided Dreamweaver tutorial
notes
/ reference books for students to use. One of my students knew a little
flash as well to put into their website.

As for Unit 2 Outcome 1, thought of doing Actionscript in Flash and
getting students to produce work from a portfolio of exercises where
they
build up the skills. This would count towards their mark and then might
give a quick open book test to see how much they learnt, plus they have
to
do the ICT careers bit too. I am trying to keep the course "fun" by
introducing some 2D arcade games, do a jigsaw puzzle program and webpage
creation / effects - I think those teaching gamemaker is also a good
idea.

It would have been great if there were only two outcomes in unit 1,

Now that IT is an elective in middle school, and Im not teaching it
anymore,
I was just lucky most students could handle Dreamweaver well for OC1 and
3
but Access was a bit too unfamiliar for students. I basically used the
VITTA
Outcomes with only stylistic changes the kids - who are mainly year 10's
-
struggled through the documentation requirements and really just wanted
to
use the computers to do their webpages. We had to postpone our exam to
fit
it all in.

I don't know flash well enough to know how valid it is to study for unit
1.
My thoughts are that its okay as long as I use 'Actionscript'? But not
if I
don't. 'better get learning it...

Oh I am so glad to read these comments! I thought it was just me.
I would like to add my agreements - the course is too long and there it
too
much stuff which doesn't allow us to really develop the students
actual skills! I have 7 students who have never used a computer
before! We do seem to go over and over the same things in the course.
I am only teaching this subject for one more year, the 'real' IT teacher
comes back from OS next year and I can't wait!
Love reading about all the skills we will able to develop in year 7 & 8
- we teach IT for one period a week to our juniors and have no
compulsory IT
in middle school! So, good luck with meeting our VELS targets!!

Not sure who to make this feedback, nor whether it was just me who
encountered this problem with Unit 1. I ran out of time. I took so
long
with the database and the original web page/publication for outcome 2
that
outcome 3 will need to be finished in the first week of next term.

Perhaps I made the mistake of having a web page for outcome 2 and should
have used some other form of publication?

Unit 3 worked much better for us because it dropped down to 2 outcomes,
although my students (one of whom is very pedantic) struggled with
making a
proto-type - he wanted the real deal nor could he see the logic of
putting
the networking part with the web site (dont think he was alone there).

Anyway I just thought this was a good time to find out how others felt
and
perhaps pass the message on up the line (unless it was just me being
more
disorganised than usual!). This will be the last thing I get involved
with,
I think, as I finish teaching IT next Friday. I am off to Brunei in
August
to teach Business Studies.

I have used this list daily for the last 7 years and, without it, would
never have coped. I just want to say a huge big thanks to everyone who
posts. Keep up the great work. In Scotland, where I am originally from,

Apologies for Xposts.

This year was hard in IT11 and ITA because of the large amount of new
skills that needed to be taught for the first time - especially
databases in ITA... why that had to be the FIRST outcome I'll never
know: a very odd bit of planning, I thought.

I know I spent a LOT more time than usual on developing practical skills
in semester 1 ITA. I hope to get time back for theory in sem 2
because for my kids spreadsheets and web authoring are easy peasy.

Also, ITA U4O2 is a short and sweet test stemming from normal theory so
time need not be spent on learning yet another tool.

Anyway, we are all (I'm sure) madly rejigging our junior classes so the
new VCE IT skill requirements are introduced in the lower levels so
there won't be the precipitous learning curve we faced this year.

For example, the year 11 kids having done databases and programming this
year will find ITA databasing and SD programming easier next year.

Hi Folks,

Definitely too much to squeeze into a single year. Outcomes had to be
churned out every 5 to 6 weeks - a very tall order for students with no
prerequisite required.
Also, the attempt to filter down Yr 12 and higher content into Yr 11 has
overcrowded the course.
Decent web design( html , graphical manipulation, forms, validation,
etc, ) decent database skill acquisition ( tables, reports,
relationships, validation, forms, mail merge, etc ) can't be done from
scratch in 6 weeks inclusive of assessment with 3 x 72 min periods to
say nothing of missed lessons , assemblies etc.
And now I am trying it again with programming in a new language ...
Too much quantity , too little quality.

Just my thoughts ..

Hi there

Just wanted your ideas. I am investigating ways to improve the use of
ICT across the curriculum and was wanting to know what great ideas
other schools have. Including ideas of how you go about ensuring staff
participate in ICT PD and what you offer regarding ICT development- ie
ICDL or Cert 1 etc.

we are offering staff pd via the it staff but wanted to know other
avenues. Thanks
