[Yr11 Information Technology] Unit 2 Outcome 1: Programming

Hi Mark and fellow Yr11 teachers,
 
  The wording of this SAC caught my eye too :

"   ....      the student should be able to demonstrate progression in
the ability to use a programming or scripting language, record the
learning progress electronically, and explain possible career pathways
that require the use of the software skills."

"a programming language or a scripting language for Outcome 1. Students
are required to develop a folio of tasks that demonstrate progress in
the use of one of these tools "

The assessment task can be one of :
 .   using ICT tools and techniques, produce a solution and an
information product in response to a client brief; 
would allow for an end product to be created I suppose. 

   However, progression using a programming or scripting language would
open up an infinite ( almost ) array of possibilities from the Folio 1
to Folio 5 type and/or SAC 21 , using languages from the mainstream to
the fringe. I am even thinking Gamemaker may be allowed ..... ??

  It is nice when the students make something at the end I suppose but
not compulsory from the reading. Scripting can be anything from
Openscript using Flash to javascript , vbscript etc.

 Any google search for "  <insert language name > online
tutorials/lessons "  should give plenty of exercises to choose from.
There are also 6 VB.NET exercises posted on the Software Development
site at edulists  but more for Yr 12 level.

 Our students do Flash in Yr 9,  VB.NET in Yr 10, PHP and MySQL in Yr
12 so I am thinking I might go with either :
   
   1. Basic PHP/MySQL or
   2. VBA behind Access or Excel or
   3. ASP in web pages or
   4. java  or
   5. javascript or
   6. python 

   If you go with something new check that your network or servers can
run the new software. 

  and I might just use the Agile systems development model thrown in at
no extra cost to highlight alternatives to the Waterfall model of the
SDLC ( one for the software development teachers to consider !  ).
