[Yr11 Information Technology] PHP for Unit 2

Hi Russell,

I used PHP for this task this year. Students do the work in Notepad,
then check it through the localhost.
We use the Xampp lite distribution of Apache 2, PHP 5 and MySQL

Easy to setup on kid's own computers, but also on a central networked
PHP server so they could upload and test files remotely.

Kevork has produced a great set of PHP exercises, plus the VITTA
Programmer's Toolkit from a couple of years ago has PHP stuff (although
you need to rewrite some of it for PHP 5)

In addition, if you are using the Potts book, by mid-2008 (hopefully),
there will be a set of simple exercises on the Nelson website that you
can download.

W3 schools has great little tutorials as well.

We also do PHP in two other programming courses at Yrs 9 and 10,
including MySQL. The students enjoy this.

James

Subject: [Yr11 Information Technology] PHP for Unit 2

Dear List,

I would like to have a go at having next year's Year 11s learn PHP.

I am interested to hear from others how they are going about this.

I am thinking I will use a WAMP package (Apache/MySQL/PHP bundle)
to streamline installation. I do have a machine here I'm going to set
up as a linux server but I'm apprehensive about giving out accounts on
it, hence the standalone option. For people using WAMP, which one are
you using?

Has anyone used the PHP integration in Dreamweaver? They will be
using Dreamweaver (MX 2004) for web pages so I thought it might make
for a smooth transition, but I haven't yet tried it myself to see how
it works.

What about PHP frameworks such as Zend Framework--does anyone use
those for Unit 2 IT or is it better to keep it simple?

While I'm at it, seeing I will be setting my MySQL anyway--is anyone
using MySQL (perhaps with a nice web management interface) for the
database topics in Unit 1 or IT Apps Unit 3? I think it may be too
tricky for many of my kids but thought I would ask the question in any
case.
