Hi Brandon,

We are a VET / VCAL campus (Yr10-12) in Sunshine (previously an ATC now a TTC). We have 2 little UP3D printers here at our college and we predominately print in ABS plastic. However, we're currently in the procedure of purchasing another printer. This one will be used primarily for PLA plastic and we have decided to go with the Ultimaker brand.

I will give you a run down on software and machines we use with the students. We use SolidWorks for our CAD software. Our CAM packages include V-Carve Pro and HSMworks for SolidWorks. Our CNC machines in use here are 2 x UP3D printers, 1 x PlasmaCAM, 1 x Roland MDX40, 1 x JobMaka 1200x1200 CNC router, 1 x HAAS CNC Super Min Mill2 and 1 x HAAS ST10 CNC lathe.

Worth a visit up here to take a look sometime. As I previously stated in an earlier email, we are hosting the DATTA Vic conference this year in May.

Cheers, Aaron

Subject: [Systems Engineering Teachers' Mailing List] 3D printing in the classroom

Howdy All,

I have been teaching 3D printing classes to yr 9 students for two years now. We also have System Engineering students using the same printers. The students are developing some very exciting project models which is very pleasing to see.
At present we have about 50-60 students using only four 3D printers which is really bottle-necking the whole process.

As you know 3D printing takes time, so our students have been concentrating on developing lots of small pieces to print. We spend a lot of time designing and we try to stagger the actual printing process each time.

We currently use the UP! Plus 3D printers from 3D printing Systems.

For those of you who also run 3D printing classes/courses:

1) What is your student to 3D printer ratios?

2) What brand/model of printers are you all using? PLA or ABS plastic?

3) What sort of projects are your students developing?

4) How is your 3D printing classroom set up? Any photos of your setup?

I feel that this technology is very important for the students and their futures and I would love to develop a proper 3D printing classroom.
We are looking for classroom setup/layout ideas in hope that we can eventually develop a first class 3D printing and design lab.
If you think you have a good setup (that works!) or you have some good ideas I would love to hear from you or possibly visit your school to share ideas.
