[Systems Engineering Teachers' Mailing List] syseng Digest, Vol 100, Issue 9

Hello Rob,

I found Q6 straight forward, with the answer C describing enough to choose the correct operation.

For Q12, the batteries question, 'Reason' being 'why you bothered doing it', does equate to current drawn, while 'current available' doesn't sound right - even if you may draw a higher current in that configuration.

Q18 has a table that represents correct operation - answer C.

Q20 has windings in plural, so presumably that covers identical primary and secondary turns.

Cheers,

Martin.

My thoughts:
Q6 would require some indication of motor drive direction to determine rotor rotation. As the output port is of smaller diameter then the input, the output would have a higher pressure. No correct answer for Q6. Q7 =D.

Q12 batteries in parallel allows the ability to supply more current only if the load demands it.

Q18. C is correct but only for that input condition. The gate may be faulty and produce that condition for all input states. Not a reliable test.

Q20 needs to specify the secondary windings to be able to answer the question

Hi Ken,

For anyone that hasn't seen the sample paper, a sample exam for the new study design is now available and has answers for the multiple choice section. Thanks for drawing my attention to the paper Ken.
http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Documents/exams/technology/sysengin-samp-w.pdf

I have just skimmed the answers to the multiple choice section and I have several queries that are worth discussing in this forum.

Multiple choice
Q2 I believe that field testing tests refer to performance requirements. My answer (D).
Q6 Hydraulic pumps force the fluid around the outside of an external pump gear, the answer appears to indicate that the fluid is forced through the gears. My answer (C).
Q7 can someone confirm that the pressures are the same at these points? I know that this is not referring to the points where the gears mesh causing high pressure or where the gears separate causing low pressure, but I imagine that there would still be a lower pressure at point D then C. However, I don't have any practical experience with these pumps.
Q18 Nand gate, My answer (C).
Q20 the picture indicates the same number of windings(200) for the input and output, so the ratio should be 1:1. My answer (C).

Hi Ken,

Have you downloaded the Assessment Report from the VCAA site.

http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Pages/vce/studies/systemseng/exams.aspx

Most of the questions have worked asnswers or descriptions.

There is , however, there is a problem with Question 17b.

The answer is technically correct as the relay does turn the lights on and off. The problem is that realy is energised when the lights are off. This will lead to the battery going flat whenever the car isn't used for some period of time.

The top (normally off) contact should be connected to the lights in order for the curcuit to operate in real life situation, where the relay is energised when the lights are on.

Cheers
