Student F1 race teams from all over Victoria have been challenged to beat a sizzling race time of just 1.141 seconds in the quest for the fastest F1 race team in the nation.

At the recent Queensland "F1 in Schools Technology Challenge" State Finals a Brisbane team known as "F1 Super Geeks" (sponsored by the Super Geeks franchise) rocketed their miniature F1 car down the 20-metre track in a time which is even quicker than the 1.270 set by Team Australia at last month's F1 in Schools World Finals in Singapore. Australia had finished second fastest out of 25 teams with that time. Interestingly, those students who came second in the world are from the same school as the F1 Super Geeks.

Victorian teams will be hoping they can emulate "Basilisk Performance" from Sebastopol College in Ballarat - also a part of Team Australia - which won the coveted Best Engineered Award, came 5th outright, and retained The Ashes against England's top team. Members of Basilisk Performance will be helping with the running of the Victorian State Finals.

High schoolers from across the state have used space-age software and industry-standard manufacturing technology to design-test-make model Formula 1 cars as part of a nationwide technology competition involving 35,000 students which aims to inspire, guide and equip young people into engineering and manufacturing-based career paths.

The competition is very tight. Only two Victorian teams will make it through to the 2011 National Finals at Eastern Creek International Raceway next March. At that event the best two teams in the nation will be selected to form Team Australia 2011.

Australia is the most successful nation of the 33 that participate being world champions in 2006...2nd and 3rd in 2008...2nd, 3rd and 4th in 2009...and 2nd and 5th in 2010.

F1 in Schools is run in Australia by the not-for-profit organisation, Re-Engineering Australia Foundation, which is sponsored by the Defence Materiel Organisation, Cisco Webex, ResMed and the Victorian Government.

Your contact at the VIC State Finals is REA Foundation representative Deborah Maloney on 0439 173 426.

Students are available to be interviewed.

ABOUT RE-ENGINEERING AUSTRALIA FOUNDATION.
Not-for-profit organisation Re-Engineering Australia Foundation Ltd was founded by Sydney engineer Michael Myers in 1988 (a fellow of Engineers Australia). Passionate about reversing the national skills shortage, Michael wanted to inspire, equip and guide more young people to pursue technical careers, eg. engineering, industrial design, manufacturing. Original patron was the Hon. John Button and, following his passing away, the new patron is Dr Peter Farrell - CEO & Chairman of the ResMed Corporation. REA launched the F1 in Schools Technology Challenge to Australia (largest school technology competition in the world - 33 nations, 9M students). REA has grown it to 35,000 high school students from 350 schools across Australia. 37% girls participation. REA has begun engaging with primary schools...students in Grade 5 and 6 are now using million dollar engineering software and professional-standard manufacturing equipment. Another 100,000 students make use of the same technology for their non-F1 curricular work. REA’s goal is to reach 900 schools. Michael has conducted extensive research into the psychological drivers of young people and this data has helped make the program such a success.. REA has been recognised with numerous awards inc. Prime Ministers Award for Excellence (twice), Engineers Australia Presidents Award, The Warren Centre Award. Australia is most successful nation at the annual F1 in Schools World Finals: 2006 world champions...2008 2nd & 3rd...2009 2nd & 3rd & 4th...2010 2nd & 5th. www.rea.org.au and www.f1inschools.org.au
