Hello subscribers to the list....

Hope you all had a refreshing break. Thought I would tell teacher subscribers about a new resource...which arrived in your school just before the end of Term 1.

Schools have recently been sent a DVD called Student Learning February 2006. This DVD has been developed by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) and the Department of Education & Training's Office of Learning and Teaching (OLT). It is designed to facilitate teacher access to student learning materials by providing a single resource with a common menu and search function.

The DVD also includes the Design Awareness in Schools resource. To access Design Awareness in Schools, click on this title in the opening menu. Design Awareness in Schools contains:

Design - about design, design in the Standards, effective design, creativity, aesthetics, critical thinking

Design elements - line, tone, colour, texture, shape, form, sound, taste and smell

Design principles - focus space, unity, rhythm, balance

Design process - design briefs, investigating, designing, producing, analysing and evaluating, design process wall charts

Design in ICT - information products: websites, letters, charts and graphs, business cards, resumes, reports, questionnaires, emails, slideshows, newsletters, brochures, invitations, posters, tables; design elements; conventions checklist

Activities - Level 6 activities including teacher resources and worksheets

Resources - books and online resources

Careers - information about design related careers

Of particular interest to technology teachers will be the section on the design process, which includes a number of useful pro formas including one for writing a design brief. It also contains graphic organisers for developing design ideas and plans. In the activities section, Gowns and Wraps shows one approach to using the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS). The Design and ICT section demonstrates conventions for improving information products.

I would invite teachers to let me know what you think of the Design Awareness in Schools resource by sending an email to me personally tran.lorraine.i at edumail.vic.gov.au

Lorraine Tran
