[Year 12 SofDev] ✈exciting day - from your Administrator

Hi Kevork

I had assumed that, as the address for bpfitz was also the address for Brett Fitzsimmons [bpfitz at netspace.net.au], perhaps Brett had a virus of some sort and he could/would perhaps fix it. But his response to an earlier similar email was "No idea, should it have gone to the Algorithmics mail group!". I certainly see your problem.

Re the loss of funding, I had no idea that Edulists had lost all funding. I once kept a community website up and running with no other support, but finally dropped it after I moved away from the area, so I have some small idea of the time and effort required even though my financial input was limited to paying for domain name and web hosting.

This is a most valuable resource for teachers and it would be sad to see it go.

Perhaps we could all chip in, if only on a voluntary basis - like Wikipedia.

Hi Robert

This is an obvious problem we haven’t seen before.

Short of blocking offensive email addresses from ever posting from that address ( which I have done with <mailto:bpfitz at netspace.net.au> bpfitz at netspace.net.au ) we can’t do too much more. Subscribing is open to the public. Posting is open to all subscribers unless they carry viruses or other malware.

This year the service you enjoy at Edulists comes to you from 100% voluntary efforts/equipment/expertise and time from yours truly, as those who sponsored the service in the past and saw its value no longer believe in supporting it any longer. They believe this should be provided by subject associations.

So, as I consider whether 21 years is the right age at which to retire Edulists and move on with other projects, these little irritations are in the context of the worldwide security breaches ( WannaCry , Petya etc) just that , irritations.

I hope you can see where I am coming from and thanks for your patience.

Speak soon

Kevork
